Best kind of braids to result in nice, wavy-curly hair...?

I have medium-length hair, just past my shoulders, and I've recently been braiding it after a shower, leaving the braids in overnight, and taking them out in the morning for curl.

I was wondering, what kind of braids result in the best curl? And how many? One big French braid doesn't get my hair curly enough, but people keep telling me that more than one will make my hair too 'crimped' looking.

I have a bit of a round face - and hair thats too curly makes me look plump-er.

Try doing an increasing number of plaits (sorry...braids!) until you get the effect you like the best. I would have thought two would not be too dramatic. If you start them as close to the top of your head as possible then you will avoid the annoying straight bit at the top. A French plait is a good way to achieve this and I find that adds a nice bit of volume too. I find the more plaits the merrier (though I can't do French plaits sadly) but then I do like huge hair! I would try four; perhaps experiment when you're not going anywhere the next day :) try 'looser' braids for a less frizzy effect.

You should dry your hair after your shower and put it into two french braids. To avoid the overly crimped look, don't braid them too tight. You can experiment with it to see how tight you should make it for however curly looking you want it. Best of luck!

I like to have curly hair sometimes too. With my hair, all I have to do is put it in two braids overnight after a shower. It totally works.( but after your shower, brush it first so it will be better in the morning. Then put in nice tight braids.) Sleep with them in and then in the morning take them out but don't brush them. It will look UGLY. (that is what the brushing before thing was for.) Good luck with your hair!

Well since tha tis his natural hair... Never use baby oil in your hair, its bad for your hair and scalp.... you could use a curl serum, and then braid it, that works better than the baby oil.

well you have 2 options:

1: cut the relax and start brand new without the headache of 2 entirely different textures

2: grow out the relaxer with regular trims.

If you grow out the relaxer take some kind of supplements to help keep it strong as you're transitioning.

Natural hair requires different type of products and care than relaxed hair. Treasuredlocks.com has really good products for natural hair. I'm using the elixir while i transition. it makes the new growth easier to comb through and keeps it all moisturized. you will need to find a protective style as well such as a bun or braids

#1red gives some good information. I've been natural for about six years and heat free for about six months (no dryers, curlers, or flat irons).

If you don't want to chop all your hair off and start new (that wasn't an option for me) you can wear protective styles. You can choose to wear braided styles, you can just have your hair straightened with a press or flat iron as the relaxer grows out. Make sure you keep your ends trimmed. Your health is reflected in your hair so you want to take care of yourself and drink lots of water.

I would not suggest a lot of products because chemicals especially in excess aren't good for your or your hair. It's a learning experience. Explore the web and experiment to see what works for you.

It's a journey and you will get frustrated with your hair at time, but don't give up. You have endless option.

1) Never add more extension hair than the natural hair you intend to braid.

2) Always use a conditioner spray every other day. Just mist away. Your hair has to stay moisturized.

3) Use a light oil every 3 days or so. Make sure you add oil after the conditioner spray. Olive oil, tea tree, peppermint oil are all good ones. No petroleum products.

4) Because you're braiding your hair, there is no need to perm it. Never braid freshly premed hair. It will break while in micros. You must wait at least 2-3 weeks and do a deep conditioning first.

4) Wash your hair every other week at least, regardless of braids or not. Dry, dirty hair will break on you. I used a clear shampoo to avoid excessive slippage and no conditioner since I used a spray every other day. You also may want to air dry loose and tie it down with a silk scarf when slightly damp. Try to skip the hair gel.

5) After about 3 weeks you have to get your edges re-done. The fine hair around you nape and hairline are too fragile for braids to hang loosely from new growth. Also this area is where build-up mostly occurs. Build up will dry out these areas and get hard. The hard clumps make the braid less flexible at the base and more prone to pulling hair from the root.

6) Always tie your hair up at night with a silk scarf. If that's too much for you, sleep on a satin pillow case. You'll avoid overnight damage this way.

7) Clip at least a centimeter of hair between Micros. You also want to Deep condition your hair between micro-ing your hair. I usually, deep condition, trim and rest my hair for about a week to 2 weeks between Micros. My resting styles was a Fro', natural two strand twists or medium cornrows with extension hair.

7) Last but not least, insanely tight braids are not a good thing. It only hurts your follicles. Your braids only need to be so tight. If it hurts after the braider finishes, it's too tight!

Hi, I have thought of getting braids before, but I just don't know. I love it when I see it on black women and the few occasions of white women. Also, I think dreds (sp?) are so cool- like the witch in Narnia- that was hot!

You have to be a special kind of white girl to sport braids like a black girl. Also, dreads are not irreversible, you just have to cut them off and wait until new hair grown in. If you go to a professional, your braids should stay put even if you have straight hair.

Cornrows, on the other hand, usually look trashy on white people. The contrast between hair and scalp is much more visible on white people than on black people.

Yes, I have straight hair and my best friend braids my hair once a month in different styles. It usually lasts about a week or so. I put gel on it at night and wear a do-rag or bandana to keep my hair nice while I sleep.

Only put dreads in your hair if you want to keep it like that for life. I haven't seen too many white people that know how to keep their dreads looking nice, that's the problem. And you would have to have really thick hair to make it look right.

As long as you have the right attitude braids look good on anybody! Even if your hair was only 1 inch and silky straight you could get your hair braided. You would just have to find someone who is really good. GO FOR IT : )

Braid your hair in small braids all over b4 bed and sleep in it. Take them out in the morning . Or, braid and leave in for atleast 3-4 hours. The longet the better. Use mouse to style and firm.

Good luck with that. Those are the only two ways, and if your in that much of a hurry that you can't use a crimper, or braid before bed the night before, then you might as well deal with straight hair. If you don't have a crimper, take a shower the night before the day that you want crimped hair, braid it, and sleep like that. It will stay crimped all day, unless you straighten it. I straighten my hair every day in about 3 minutes, so you can crimp it in about 4-5 minutes. If the reason you don't want to crimp is because you don't have a crimper, then I'd say stick with the braids.

Make sure the seam is down the middle of your head. The ties should be in the back. Bring both ties to the front and tie in the front just at the hairline, pull the flap in the back . So the rag is smooth , and free of lines.

if your hair is stubbornly straight like asian hair, for example, it will not work without a body wave perm, even that might not take. but, when my hair was that long, i got the same effect by scrunching after towel drying with garnier fructis style xxl mousse %26amp; gel. i think any mousse and gel could work though. then, putting it up in a bun and finger scrunching a bit more, maybe with some more gel before heading out the door (air dry). the longer your hair gets, the easier it is to get that effect. well, at least that was the case for me...

Hey there!

Firstly, try sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase. The smoothness of the fabric prevents the friction of a regular pillowcase on your hair, which is what makes your hair frizzier overnight.

Secondly, gels that dry with a harder, almost crunchy texture, tend to lose their holding power overnight if you roll around a lot in your sleep. Try using products with a more pliable, flexible hold like mousses and creams.

In the morning, while getting ready, flip your head upside down and spritz your curls with some water (or leave in conditioner - the extra moisture can't hurt!) and scrunch them a bit to reactivate the curl. If you still have some frizzies, use a frizz serum of cream (only a little bit) and smooth through your hair. (Focusing on the pieces around your face if you're short on time - these are the ones most people will see!)

Another trick you can try is "twisting" your curls while they are wet, and blow drying them that way. You can find tips for this on www.naturallycurly.com , but it helps the curls stay defined!

1.)Take a shower with shampoo and conditioner.

2.) While your hair is still wet braid your hair in many little braids. All over head.

3.) Let your hair air dry.

4.) After about an hour or two take your braids off.

5.) Do not touch the waves. Let them sit for 5 mins

6.) After that gently brush with your fingers.

7.) The with hair spray, spray your hair.

If you don't have hairspray then don't move hair to much.

this trick is so old but after washing your hair brush it out so there's no knots in it. Make little braids throughout your hair and sleep with them (or you could blow dry our hair) When you take them out, your hair should be wavy.

NOTES:

*the longer you leave them in, the better they are most likely to stay

*smaller braids give you smaller waves and vice versa

*loose braids will cause less waves

*if you only want waves at the bottom, don't briad your hair too tight at the top.

U could try using a curling iron. Thinner ones work better for me. Take some hair and just curl it. Depending on how you wrap it around the iron and how long you leave it will depend on how wavy your hair will be.

I think the trick with highly textured hair is:

Gentle consistant care.

You should probably opt for a creamy shampoo, and don't wash more than 2 x a week. If you notice flakes between washes just plain water should help.

If you are able to get a brush through your hair when it is dry consider a hair brush with "boar hair bristles" mixed with nylon ones, the boar hair carries oil from your scalp down the ends as you brush it through.

You will probably need to deep condition at least 1 x a week. Hot oil was designed for your hair type, it is too heavy for other types. Just make sure it is make with a natural plant oil, like almond, olive, or avacado. Mineral oil will not sink in!

you just need to learn how to properly moisterize your hair. i cowash (conditioner wash) my hair at least once a week with vo5 clarifying conditioner, i deep condition my hair with Organic Root Stimpulator Replenishing Pak, i wash my hair with shampoo once a month with cantu shea butter. i also rinse my hair everyday with water, or at least spritz it with water. for a leave in i mix shea butter, jojoba oil, and olive oil

Try using 'Herbal Essences - Body Envy' - in a orange bottle, or 'Herbal Essences - Drama Clean' - in a green bottle, conditioners. These are the only two I can find (I even looked at the expensive conditioners in salon's) that does not have 'alcohol' as the 2nd or 3rd ingredient. The alcohol really dries out your hair. Try putting conditioner on before and after you shampoo. When you put conditioner on before you shampoo, do not rinse it out. When you shampoo, just shampoo your scalp, not all of your hair. When you rinse the shampoo out, it will run down the rest of your hair, and wash it good enough. You could also try breaking open some vitamin E capsules and put this in your conditioner. Just be sure to shake your bottle of conditioner each time you use it, if you do this, to prevent your hair from getting greasy. I do all this on my hair, and it works great!! Hope it helps!

As for perming your hair - this dries out your hair, so I would try not to perm it too often - or don't perm it at all.

I think Garnier Frutis suxs big time you need a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. you should try Infusium 23. It has a special line designed for dry hair . I think its called Moisturologie (something like that). Also you will need a trim so that the damaged ends will be elimanated. And as for a relaxer you could do that but if I were you I would try a mild one first that will make you hair more managable. Hope this works out for you.

I have tried about 6 different curling irons, a perm (I wanted bigger curls but I've heard that the bigger rods don't hold and it's not worth the damage,needless to say I think after about 6 months all it was was damage) I've used rollers and the only way to get them to semi-work is to sleep with them in and I've tried braiding wet hair. NOTHING works. All I want is big spiral sorta wavy hair, since my hair is kinda long I think it would look nice however I haven't been able to curl my hair and it's VERY annoying. sounds like all this trying to curl it is damaging your hair,

stop everything and get rid of fructis its not a good product in my opinion, go to your salon and get a professional shampoo and condtioner (perhaps a volumising one to bring up some bounce) and im sorry but your might just have to live with the fact your not meant to have curls. some people just cant but talk to your salon, they might be able to help with adding volume and bounce :)

i twist my hair!! i use flat twist, kind of like cornrows, but only two hair strands, flat to the scalp, after you wash your hair and let is dry over night or undey a hooded dryer. if you do it tightly it will be very curly and not wavy, also the bigger the section of hair the larger your curls will be!!

I think the trick with highly textured hair is:

Gentle consistant care.

You should probably opt for a creamy shampoo, and don't wash more than 2 x a week. If you notice flakes between washes just plain water should help.

If you are able to get a brush through your hair when it is dry consider a hair brush with "boar hair bristles" mixed with nylon ones, the boar hair carries oil from your scalp down the ends as you brush it through.

You will probably need to deep condition at least 1 x a week. Hot oil was designed for your hair type, it is too heavy for other types. Just make sure it is make with a natural plant oil, like almond, olive, or avacado. Mineral oil will not sink in!

please help me. I have long, black hair thats like up to belly button (xD) and i usually braid it when i go out. my friend told me to leave it out as braiding the hair makes it prone to splitends etc.. but if i leave it out my hair gets EXTREMELY tangled.... anyone have a hairstyle for me??

a ponytail is probably the simplest version

...or maybe you could go to a hair stylist and ask them to braid your hair into loads of tiny plats, it lasts a really long time and i don't believe that it makes it prone to split ends (you could always ask a professional). I had that done when i had really long hair and it looked very pretty, fetches lots of compliments as well ;)

if you would like to leave your hair out you could use shampoos/conditioners for children (most of them stop hair from tangling) or brush it often to stop it from getting too tangled...

..I've just had a haircut because i got tired of brushing my hair all the time (17 inches of suffering, haha)

If you get a perm which makes it really curly, then why braid it. I would suggest one or the other but not both.

NO! Do not perm your hair then braid it. Chemical processing makes the hair more fragile and after a perm it becomes more brittle for a while. If you braid after such a harsh process, your hair will not be able to withstand the tension from the braids and break off, falling out in not so desirable amounts. You should do one or the other, but not both at the same time like that. If you wanted your braids to be less course, do the perm and wait a couple weeks, deep conditioning and keeping your hair really healthy, before you braid. Good Luck.
